Affordable wedding gift ideas

One big question arises before every wedding:

“Should I give from the registry or off the registry?”

While it’s true that couples register for the items they really want, gifts from the registry can be expensive and impersonal. Some of us prefer to put thought into the gifts we give, especially when attending a wedding of close friends or family. Therefore, giving a gift that is not pre-selected can be a meaningful and affordable alternative to registry items.

First, consider your talents. Can you provide a valuable service that money can’t buy?

For example, I have a friend who is a phenomenal makeup artist. Often, she will offer to apply the bridal party’s makeup free of charge as a wedding gift to friends. Although she has saved her friends thousands of dollars over the years, the beauty she has created in countless wedding photos is priceless.

However, you don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to provide significant services to the couple on their wedding day.

Even amateur photographers can create a high-quality photo book online from candid photos that the professional photographer was too busy to capture. Or, offer to care for the couple’s pet while they honeymoon. I don’t know a single pet owner who wouldn’t be grateful knowing their pet is in loving hands for a week or two (and knowing they’re not coming home to a kennel bill totaling several hundred dollars!).

If you don’t have a tangible skill to offer the bride and groom, consider an affordable membership or subscription that they can use all year long.

Are they movie buffs? Netflix movie rental memberships start at $4.99 per month. For nature lovers, an eighty-dollar National Parks and Recreation Annual Pass admits the holders and guests to the most beautiful parks in the country for the entire year. If the couple shares a passion for a hobby such as travel, fitness or music, they may enjoy a magazine or online book subscription. Getting creative will show how well you know the happy couple while saving you money.

Of course, off-registry gifts aren’t always appropriate. Ultimately, your selection will depend on the tastes and preferences of the bride and groom. If you know the couple has their hearts set on their pre-selected items, consider purchasing a simple, affordable gift from their registry. Then add a personal touch, such as monogramming or engraving.

Personalized Business Gifts

Companies usually give business gifts to advertise and promote what they offer. However, gifts can also be given to people other than customers and clients. They can be presented in many types of business affairs, such as trade shows, conferences, recognition and award days, anniversaries, and holidays.

If you want to thank a colleague who has been a good partner and helped you a lot throughout your career, you can give something to show that you really appreciate it.

This is where personalized gifts really come into action and serve a meaningful purpose. Finding such a unique gift seems difficult, but if you plan, put thought into it, and go about it the right way it can be easier then it first appears.

Personalized gifts can make a one of a kind gift for your colleague. You can find different kinds of ways to personalize and customize various fabrics, leathers, wooden or metal items. Some popular choices you may want to consider personalizing include a leather business card case or holder, or a leather bounded business journal or planner. These business gifts are important and very useful accessories for a business professional.

In today’s modern world, people have business cards and need a card case holder so that their cards stay neat and organized in a briefcase or purse. These can be stainless steel or leather and can be customized and engraved with your colleague’s initials on the front. Engraving, customizing, and personalizing a gift really adds a special touch and makes it more unique and meaningful.

In business, technology may reign supreme, but there’s always room for the elegance of actually writing! Giving a personalized black leather journal to friends who have innovative and intelligent ideas enables them to conveniently write down and preserve their spur of the moment thoughts. This is a sophisticated gift that can make a perfect solution to scratch paper. Exquisitely embossed with a name or initials, this personalized journal can be a truly memorable gift of your appreciation.

Other unique gifts you may consider are personalized bags, magnetic money clips, personalized photo albums, and monogrammed desk accessories. Personalizing your gift is a great and effective way to show how special the person is to you. So make the smart choice to personalize your gift, whether it is for colleagues, friends, or relatives!

Beneficial gift ideas for showers and weddings

June has always been wedding month although the summer seems to be full of wedding showers, parties and other events all celebrating these happy occasions.

If you’re trying to think of a novel gift idea, why not consider giving the gift of good health to your friends or family who are starting out in their new life together. Here are a bunch of ideas for shower or wedding gifts, many of which you can create without breaking the bank.

Grilling is a great way to cook with little or no fat. And, you can do chicken breasts, fish and lots of vegetables. But, lots of newlyweds live in condos or apartments and can’t use a barbecue. So, in place of the barbecue, buy them a good non-stick grill pan that can be used indoors all year round.

A few new brides told me they love their hand-held immersion blenders, especially for making healthy soups. They are easy to use and don’t take up much storage space. Along with the blender, you can send a few recipes for soups, sauces or even blended drinks.

A yogurt strainer is a little gadget that you can use to make yogurt cheese which is thick and creamy and a great base for spreads and dips. Yogurt cheese can be low fat and is lactose free. You could pair the gadget with a few recipes and some cinnamon, vanilla and/or lemon extract which are all great flavours to complement the taste.

Put together the makings of a healthy salad. Buy a pretty ceramic bowl, some salad tongs, a bottle or two of olive oil, some flavoured vinegars, a vegetable brush and peeler, and a few of your favourite salad recipes.

Slow cookers are making a comeback and this could be a really terrific present for a time-stretched couple who want a healthy hot meal when they get home from work. It’s one more way they will be able to have extra servings of some healthy root vegetables in a flavourful way.

Every cook should have a good set of knives — for cutting fresh fruits and vegetables, for trimming and thinly slicing meat and chicken. Good knives can be more pricey, but they last a long time and are important in a healthy kitchen.

Brides share weirdest wedding gifts

This summer, around 120 million people will attend a wedding. When it comes to wedding gift giving, there’s one rule that always applies: Stick to the couple’s registry! We asked real brides on WeddingChannel.com to talk about the worst wedding gifts they ever opened. From dusty paintings to leftover wrapping paper, you won’t believe these tales of gift giving gone bad. Here are their stories, along with expert advice on how to avoid being “that guest” yourself.

The Gift: “We got an under-the-bed storage box filled with Christmas wrapping paper, bows and a few ornaments from one of my husband’s kind of unusual relatives (a second cousin, he thinks). And the best part: We got married in July.”

The Offense: Not putting any thought into the gift

This is a pretty random choice for a gift, considering the fact that it may not even be something the couple would have use for. When you’re purchasing a gift for someone who doesn’t have a registry, you at least want them to know that you put some extra thought into the selection. When you grab anything you can get your hands on and put it in a box, it shows a lack of effort and care on your part. Another note: Unless the bride and groom have selected holiday or seasonally themed items for their registry, you shouldn’t go there. Couples more often shop for these types of items after they’ve settled into their new home.

The Gift: “We got this hand-me-down casserole dish. The dish was nine inches, oval and white, but it came in a gold wire holder with handles. (Picture something mildly similar to an Easter basket gone terribly wrong.) This gift came from the same person who gave us a blue bell with a picture of a Victorian guy and girl on it. We kept the bell because it made us giggle – a lot. The casserole dish, however, we donated.”

The Offense: Skipping the “something new” for “something old”

This is what you call regifting. It’s when you unload something you no longer want or need by passing it off as a gift to someone else. This isn’t the way you want to help someone you love celebrate a new milestone in their life, is it? Timeless jewelry and cherished family heirlooms are the only exception here – all other dated picks should stay in the depths of your attic where they belong.

The Gift: “We got a tin of potato chips! It was the oddest thing I think I’ve ever seen! We’re thankful for the empty tin now because we use it to hold our rice. But we really didn’t get it.”

The Offense: Being too casual (and random)

Though it can be a little tempting to show up to a wedding reception with the same type of gift you’d usually bring to a Saturday night affair (think wine, snacks or board games), you must remember that this is a wedding, not karaoke night at your best friend’s house. Unless the couple has specifically registered for something, it’s a good idea to skip giving food or alcohol because it’s bound to be more of a miss than a hit.

The Gift: “We received a gift that was outrageous. It was a book of illustrations of sex positions from my husband’s uncle with a handwritten note inside that says, ‘I hope this serves you as well as it’s served me.’ Um, disturbing!”

The Offense: Trying to be funny

Steer clear of inside jokes when it comes to wedding gifts. The person you’ve shared the laugh or memory with may not be the only one opening the box. So avoid a potentially awkward future encounter with the bride or groom by going with a safer pick on the registry, like barware or a lamp. And, if you must, reserve those more “personal” gift ideas for the bachelor or bachelorette party fun.

Offers A Personal Touch Gift

Nearly a year later, on May 1, owners Viki and Courtney Weir moved their personalized gift shop from its former location at 3055 Gulf Breeze Parkway to its new location in the Sea Shells Collections Shopping Center.

“Pizzaz is something very special for both me and Courtney,” Viki Weir said. “In April of 2008, we decided to go into business together and open this store. We opened the business last May and we just celebrated our one year anniversary. We started out small, and we just keep growing. As we grew and added more items we realized we needed more space. Our new spot here in the shopping center is wonderful. We have plenty of space and we are in a great location.”

The dream of owning a business goes back all the way to middle school for Courtney Weir.

“I always wanted to open a business; this type of customized gift shop here in Gulf Breeze,” Courtney Weir said. “I came up with the name for the store when I was in middle school. That is the reason that the store’s name is spelled the way it is. I didn’t correct my spelling before opening the store. We just went with the way I spelled it when I was younger.”

Unique gifts

Pizzaz features many one-of-a-kind items. What sets the local business apart from many of its competitors is the fact that all store items can be personalized or monogrammed to the customer’s satisfaction.

“Our store is about adding the personal touch,” Viki Weir said. “Our philosophy is simple. We want to provide great customer service. We want to make our customers feel special. Nothing makes a customer feel more special than personalizing or monogramming special gifts.”

The specialty gift shop features jewelry including items from the Sorrelli and Vietri collection. The business also sells a wide assortment of gifts representing five of the various colleges popular in this area.

“We do embroidery and monogramming on all of our merchandise,” Viki Weir said. “So far, we haven’t come across anything here in the store we couldn’t personalize. We carry some cosmetic bags that are already monogrammed with a letter representing a person’s name. These are very popular. We can’t keep them in stock. We monogram or customize acrylic, metal, cloth, plastic and many materials.”

Work done at store

Embroidery work or monogramming is done in the workroom of the business.

“We have commercial machines for monogramming,” Viki Weir said. “Items don’t take long to monogram or personalize. Generally we can have an item monogrammed or personalized for the customer the next day, since it is done in house. Sometimes it takes a few days, but we like to pride ourselves on having fast turnaround for our customers.”

Personalized wine glasses are also a big seller.

“We personalize wine glasses for various occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, bridal showers or vacation,” Viki Weir said. “One fun glass that is popular with visitors is ‘what happens at Pensacola Beach stays at Pensacola Beach.’ We add your name or the name of the person you are giving the glass to.”

Pizzaz also carries a variety of beach bags and handbags as well as baby gifts, stationary and invitations, beach towels, flip flops, photo frames, pillows, candles and lotion. The business features Lilly Pulitzer gifts including night lights and photo frames.

“We also offer specialty items for your vehicle,” said Courtney Weir. “We sell and customize or personalize car mats. We also customize license plates. These are very popular with our customers.”

“I love Pizzaz,” Kathy Ostrander of Gulf Breeze said. “I go in the store all the time. I love everything about the store. My favorite thing is the great personal service you get from Courtney, Viki and all of the store’s employees. They treat you like family. They will bend over backwards to help you and find what you need. They know you by name when you walk through the door. They remember what you have bought in the past. You just get a great feeling when you shop there.”

When the mother/daughter duo decided to open their business together they were optimistic about their future.

“We wanted to sell products that you couldn’t find in this area,” Viki Weir said. “We wanted to be different; be unique or special. Everyone needs their own niche.”

“We wanted to add a personal touch to our gifts and make our customers feel they received personalized treatment,” Courtney Weir added.

“Our goal after celebrating our one year anniversary is to keep doing what we have been doing,” Viki Weir said. “We live in a terrific community and we want to give back to the community and all its residents.”
