MMPI’s LA Show: The New California Gift Show

With the ink barely dry on its acquisition of the California Gift Show from dmg world media, MMPI and the LA Mart are moving ahead quickly with their plans for its unified LA gift market, to be called The New California Gift Show. The acquisition also included the former CGS’s tagline, “Trends Start Here,” which Joan Ulrich, senior vice president, MMPI, and Mark Furlet, vice president/general manager of the LA Mart, believe so aptly describes what the LA market represents and the vision that they have for the show going forward. And the New California Gift Show is receiving new and renewed interest from vendors interested in exhibiting.

As with the previous separate but concurrent shows, the New California Gift Show take place in two venues: the LA Mart, July 14–20, and the Los Angeles Convention Ctr., July 17–20. But now, for buyers shopping both venues the experience will be more seamless, according to Ulrich and Furlet. Buyers need register only once to gain access to both venues, and there will be one exhibitor directory and only one transportation system to ferry attendees between sites.

Buyers attending the July market will find much in place that is still familiar including certain elements and divisions for which the California Gift Show is known such as the World Style Bazaar in Kentia Hall. Also, programming for the summer market is in the planning and will be held in both locations as before, giving buyers another reason to visit both venues.

“We believe that the market offers something unique. The CGS has a great history and we want to give [buyers] the things that are different about the LA market,” said Peggy Coleman, vice president of marketing, LA Mart.
